How to Teach Multiplication Facts

As a former middle school teacher, multiplication was one of the topics that we struggle with. When students do not have previous multiplication knowledge, teaching fractions, decimals, equations, and many more topics becomes challenging. Of course, with practice and extra effort, it is not a problem we cannot solve. But for me, the worst part is seeing students feel embarrassed with their lack of knowledge and shot themselves down.
I decided to put some strategies together to teach the students multiplication facts they can remember to be successful mathematicians with confidence. These strategies are useful to introduce multiplication as well as to teach multiplication facts to older kids.
Before teaching multiplication, make sure your students are comfortable with addition and skip counting.
Teach your students a definition of multiplication with examples and manipulatives.
*Make sure they know multiplication is repeated addition.
3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 3 x 4
Show them 3 x 4 means 4 groups of 3. Give them examples from their interest areas. Such as 4 bags of candy, and each bag has 3 candies. Make these examples hands-on. Give them a chance to explore.
After working on the definition, teach how to find the product with different strategies.
And now that they understand the meaning of multiplication and learned some different strategies to find the product, it is time to practice.
I will list some hands-on and digital activities for you to choose from.
Hands-On
1.Spin and Answer
With a paper plate, card stock paper, push pin, and markers, you can create your own multiplication wheels. Students can spin & answer multiplication problems.
You can make some wheels for your math centers or let your students create them.
2.Practice with Dice
Let your students roll two dices and multiply the numbers.
You can ask them to record their facts.
Easy, no prep, and fun!
3.Multiplication War
Partner your students up.
Give them a deck of cards.
They will each pick two cards and multiply.
They will compare the products, and the student will the bigger product will keep all four cards.
At the end of the game, the player with the most cards wins.
4.Spinner Game
This game is from WeAreTeachers. Click here to download the game board for free and read more about the game.
5.Multiplication Bingo
Classic but still fun!
Play this game whenever you have extra time.
I used this game with my students.
But you can download a game for free from here , print and make your own set.
Multiplication Boom Cards
Your students can practice multiplication facts with these digital task cards.
They are self-graded, and your students will get feedback after each question.
